Lake Wivenhoe Lookout | Mount Glorious

Overlooking the famous Lake Wivenhoe has become a whole lot easier with two great Wivenhoe Lookout spots in South East Brisbane. Mount Glorious and Dundas provide the Moreton Bay region with two outlook spots that overlook the largest lake in South-East Queensland.

Lake Wivenhoe

The Wivenhoe Lake was formed by the Wivenhoe dam that was built on the Brisbane river in 1974 to provide almost half of the Brisbane/ Ipswich region with its source of drinking water. The dam has also been useful for flood mitigation purposes. Lake Wivenhoe is a popular recreation destination for the people of South-East Brisbane.

Mount Glorious Lookout

Mount Glorious is well known for its walking trails that are suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. Though, it is also known for being one of the greatest outlook spots of Lake Wivenhoe. So, if you are thinking about taking a trek here anytime soon, or just want to observe the Wivenhoe Lake from afar, remember to bring a picnic blanket. Mount Glorious is the perfect spot to set up and observe the rising and setting of the sun each day, and also the great wonder – Lake Wivenhoe. Amongst the trees and sounds of nature, make sure to secure one of the greatest picnic spots that this lookout has to offer. This designated lookout of Lake Wivenhoe is also wheelchair accessible for all to observe, however you may require some assistance.

Dundas Lookout

Happen to be a little closer to Dundas and still want to observe the celebrated Lake Wivenhoe from afar? Not a problem, Dundas happens to have an official Wivenhoe outlook. The Northbrook Gorges in Dundas is the perfect spot for hikers to take a trek or swim in D’Aguilar Park’s Northbrook Gorges. Admire the tranquillity of the natural surrounding environment while you trek uphill to the Wivenhoe Lookout. Once you reach the lookout take in more of the surrounding environment while you overlook Lake Wivenhoe. Make sure to take your time as this hike is a little harder than Mount Glorious. Though, once you reach the Wivenhoe Outlook in Dundas it will be well worth it. This is the perfect outlook spot for those humid summer months as it generally doesn’t get too hot.

How to reach these lookouts

Mount Glorious can be easily accessed from Brisbane. Main access areas are from Waterworks Road, The Gap and Ashgrove via the Enoggera Reservoir. Once you reach Mt Nebo-Mt Glorious Road follow through Jolly’s Lookout and Boombana National Parks. Then through Mt Nebo Village come to Manorina National Park, at that point follow to Westridge Outlook. Lastly, you will reach Mount Glorious. Getting to Dundas Lookout is quite similar to accessing the Mount Glorious lookout. Located less than 10km north of Mount Glorious, Dundas Lookout can be accessed via Mount Glorious Road.

You are welcomed to enjoy the natural aspects of Lake Wivenhoe, but there are a few rules to follow. Respect what makes the natural areas special. And it’s good to remember these areas are responsible for supplying our precious drinking water

• Leave the facilities as you found them
• Don’t cause damage to flora or fauna
• Place all litter in the bins provided
• Leave your pets at home as they can disturb the wildlife that live in the area
• Be sure to observe the signs to have a clear understanding of what you can do, where you can do it, and when you can do it
• Plan ahead and be prepared for the outdoors
• It’s a good idea to bring a first aid kit – just in case!

Be safe

The dams are part of the natural environment and they have naturally occurring characteristics that we have to stay mindful of. Bacteria levels changes and as the water debris both above and below the water. This is a normal occurrence in any natural system but it’s good to be mindful of to ensure you’re swimming in the right areas.
